Phoenix Finds Salt on Mars NASA's Mars Phoenix Lander, which arrived on Mars on May 25th, performed its first wet chemistry experiment on Martian soil June 26th. The presence of salts, which includes potassium, magnesium, sodium and chloride argues for the presence of water. The lander also found a "reasonable" number of chemicals that are needed by life as we know it. This is the first landing since January, 2004, when the Mars Rovers Spirit & Opportunity landed. Unlike the two rovers, Phoenix does not roll, it digs. It is digging for water ice at the pole. Visit Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the Phoenix Toolkit - tons of information on the mission and landing.
Hubble Repair Mission Moved to October
The space shuttle Atlantis is now scheduled to lift off on October 8th with a crew of seven astronauts and a cargo of equipment to fix & upgrade the Hubble Telescope in this fifth and final mission. This mission is a triumph of popular opinion. Former NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe had cancelled any future missions to fix the Hubble telescope after the Columbia disaster. The subsequent public outcry led to the decision by the current NASA Administrator, Michael Griffin, to repair Hubble.
